Identity theft.

September 19th, 2011 / No Comments » / by Becca

One thing I’ve never really given a lot of thought to is identity theft. Naive, I know… It’s a good thing there are places out there such as IdentityHawk that I can turn to. IdentityHawk was created to help individuals safeguard their assets, properties, and most of all; their identity. IdentityHawk helps individuals to identify areas where they may be more at risk, and how to reduce those risks.

Watching the IdentityHawk Commercial was a definite eye opener, but made me realize I do subconciously protect myself from identity theft. When I get a bill or statement to be paid, I always rip the paper up in small pieces prior to throwing it out. If it is from somewhere like the Canada Revenue Agency and has my Social Insurance Number on it, I tend to keep them instead of throwing it out as to avoid that possibility. I protect my PIN # when using my credit or debit card, and avoid filling out personal information if I can. I don’t save my credit card or bank card number online, and tend to avoid e-mailing it as well. I am a sucker for online shopping, but use reputable sites with the little ‘lock’ on the address bar – thank youuu W5 T.V. show for that.

I don’t even know what I would do if I was the victim of identity theft – where would you begin? I had a client this summer who was the victim of identity theft, and he lost so much. The individual had got a job in his name, two car loans, and four credit cards. He figured he was put about $120k in debt thanks to Mr. Theif (or Ms.). I can’t even imagine that. Do you start over with everything? Do you change your identity? What would you do?
